2006/2007 Playoff format

SCOHA 2006/2007
Joe Locicero: Are we going to modify the playoff format this year. I know that it isn't easy to set up a playoff format that everyone will agree with given the fact that a 12 team league does not lend itself easily to settle who should play whom. I don't think that giving a team a chance to lose a game just because they ended up at the top during the regular season is justification for them to still continue in the playoff. Keeping in mind the position that I have constantly stated that "Since all players pay the same amount of money to play, that the number of games any team must sit out due to playoffs should be kept to a minimum. Also all teams should have a shot at playing in the playoff, as many years ago there used to be a slacking off of participation by teams who had been eliminated for playoff contention before the season ended, thereby screwing up the quality of play for those teams still in contention." In most other leagues, there is an elimination game by the bottom teams for a "Wild Card" position to earn a spot in the playoff round. My suggestion is as follows:I believe that the bottom 8 teams should playoff for the last four playoff spots. On the same weekend the first four teams should playoff for their playoff position-here if team 4 beats team 1, then team 1 assumes Position#1 in the draw and Team 1 gets relegated to position #4. And if team 3 beats team 2, then team 3 assumes psition #2 and team 2 gets relegated to postion #3. The remaining eight teams playoff in our usual format 1-8, 2-7...etc. Perhaps someone else out there has a better solution. Pat,
I have taken your play off idea and sent it to the executive for review. I would like to talk to you about it in person to get a better understanding of your idea.
We appreciate your continued support of the association and we will respond on the play off format at the appropriate time.

Thank you,
Joe LoCicero
Hi There,

If you do go with the play-off format Pat has suggested the only thing I would modify is that in the Wild Card round First plays Second and Third Plays Forth so that the team that the forth place team can't jump from fourth to first and the first place team can't fall to forth.

This play-off format still favours the top 4 teams and teams that finish 1-4 can still lose thier first game and automatically move on.

I liked last years format because anyone finishing 1st to 8th could get the bye to the next round depending on what happened in other games. Everyone was watching every game last year in the first round!

The only concern with last years format other than 2 teams getting back in after losing a game was for instance if the first and second place team lost in the first round then the 3rd and 4th place teams ending up having to play them in the second round. If we stay with last years format we may want the two teams that get the bye after losing to be reseated 3 positions lower than thier original seating. Instead of 7th and 8th.

That my 2 cents!

Marc
Another possibility for the playoffs would be to set up a consolation round for the "losers" of the first round so that just about everyone or at least two more teams continues playing until the last or second last weekend.

Another playoff format is usings PODS or groups of teams based on where they finished in the regular season. For example we could go with (3) groups of four or (4) groups of three and play rould-robin with-in each group. If we go with four groups, that gives each team a min 3 playoff games.

The next step would be to take the 4 winners and rank them based on play-off points, +/-, and other tie breakers if needed. This would create the four teams for semi-finals and final.

This format is very common for Slow-pitch and more important it gives teams more than one pay-off game.

It is something to look and come to an agreement.
