This Week in SCOHA – October 15th, 2024

The Thanksgiving Wrap-up Edition

Did you laugh when the cranberry sauce made that noise coming out of the can? We all fall guilty to this and it will never change. Anyways, hope you had a great long weekend eating and relaxing as the SCOHA season is in full swing. I was away on a work trip last week so I should stop yapping and get right to business.

United Division: Oct.4th

BLACKHAWKS 3 FLYERS 1: This Blackhawk team has the energy of a horse running through an open field. Go ahead, set up a fence. They will just make a horse noise, jump over it and carry the hell on. Terry Davidson scored the game winner as the Hawks beat the Flyers 3-1. Flyers were down 4 key players but the rest of the team showed up ready for a war and didn’t disappoint the announced crowd of 4. Long story short, it’s still early. Flyers and Blackhawks will be bitter rivals before Christmas, you heard it here first. Flyers got a goal from captain Mike Haslam, who passed Rocket Richard for all-time goals scored. Great game, Mike!

REDWINGS 6 BRUINS 2: As a multiple eclipse survivor, this Redwing team has a bright future with the likes of Trevor “Salisbury steak” Swanson, Bob “Wimbledon” Tenison and don’t forget about John “stay between the” Lynes. Superstar John Carvalho scored twice as the Redwings folded up the Bruins like an origami swan 6-2. This game was closer than the scoreboard appears, folks. Matt Sills and whoever #15 is scored some pretty impressive goals in the loss, something to build upon for their next game. I spoke to Bruins veteran Peter Tompkins for a while on our weekly “Pucks in Deep” podcast about a bunch of things and he said they are still having fun coming to the rink and that he can’t wait to go skiing in a few months.

Masters Division: Oct.6th

BRUINS 6 BLACKHAWKS 3: The Bruins got a hatty (3 goals) from power forward Wayne Sliwinski as the Bruins continued to roll over the opposition. This time it was a 6-3 drubbing over the Blackhawks. Big Wayne also set up 2 goals as they continue to climb the SCOHA ranks in a rather tazmanian devil-like way. I spoke to Bruins forward Mike “12-string acoustic” Guitard after the game and he said they are not showboating until the cooking is done and any team can win on any given night. Tim Visser spared as the Bruins goalie and turned aside 34 shots for the W. Jeff Davis, Peter Subar and a #24 scored for the Hawks who will go over some game film on captain Jason Hoffman’s vhs machine this week.

PENGUINS 3 SENATORS 2: This game had a playoff-feel to it. Steve “around the” Horner scored the game winner, his 2nd of the game, with a buck 49 left on the powerplay as the Pens edged the Senators 3-2. For the Sens, Nick Polimeni and Warren DeForest scored in a losing cause. You should put your phone down and go for a walk if you think this Senators team is going to lose many games this year. They are just warming up the car, so stay out of the way. Both goaltenders played well in this one, arguably the top 2 goalies in this division but there’s 4 others that will have something to say about that.

DEVILS 4 SHARKS 3: Nick Miscione scored with a few minutes left as the Devils got past the Sharks 4-3 in a pretty spirited game. Sharks were missing Darren Corneau so that’s why they lost. This Shark team has all the pieces to contend. They planned several off-ice practices this past week so we will see what happens. Devils also got goals from Alfonzo Tinebra, Paul “don’t call me Tim” McGraw and Steve “killa” Watt who continued to light up the scoresheet with his strong play of late.

Sharks had goals from Dave “Le Legende” Langille, Brad Stapleton and spare player Joad Durst (good rock band singer name).

Grand Masters Division: Oct.6th

SHARKS 4 STARS 2: Walter Domingos scored the eventual game winner and even took the game puck home as the Sharks doubled up the Stars 4-2. Ernie Dunston dropped a deuce for the Sharks while Alastair Kermack and Ed Venema (best wrestler name) replied for the Stars who will find their way despite the slow start. If the Stars come back and win this division championship I will personally get a Stars jersey with captain Chris Barratto’s name on it and ask him to sign the damn thing for me. That my friends is showing confidence in a struggling team.

FLYERS 6 REDWINGS 2: I think Pat Sergi scored 2 goals as the timekeeper appears to have used his other hand for this game. Gord Bryce also scored so he is certainly earning his keep after signing a lucrative 1-year deal in the summer. He seemed more excited than unwrapping a punchbowl set after scoring his goal, a memory us SCOHA fans will remember for a few weeks. Gord’s bend not break style of play is something others can emulate as the season goes on. Redwings got goals from Brian “whipper” Watson and a promising young upstart named Mike Norman who wears number 50 after his favourite beer.

Well fellas, I am all out of ways to describe last week’s action. The 2 United games played the other night will be added to the next blog because I am still waiting to watch the game films.
