This Week in SCOHA – October 24th, 2023

The Horseshoe Tavern Edition

First off, thanks to league commisioner Terry Gudgeon for reversing his ban on black stick tape that was marking up the boards too much....

A few teams boarded their team bus with sour moods after a crazy week of action while others remained hotter than a roti from The Hot Spot at Kenilworth and Cannon. Let's get right to the action from this past weekend.

United Division:

Bruins 4 Sharks 3: Justin Mol had a pair of goals, Lino Cosco filled in admirably for Bruno between the pipes, and Mike Miscio spared for the 2nd time in 3 nights as the Bruins held off the Sharks 4-3. For the Sharks, Duane "Gretzky" Marzi continued his torrid pace with another goal. This guy could play in the KHL with only a North Face jacket under his jersey and still score goals. No shoulder pads or elbow pads. Just the damn jacket. Stick tap to Charlie Polizzi who scored the game winner and is having quite a productive season so far.

Blackhawks 1 Redwings 1: The leading cause of dry skin is a towel. This game was far from dry as both teams played like it was game 7 out there. Honourable mention to Nicole the scorekeeper who tracked the shots on goal: 17-16 for the Wings. John "get in the damn" Carvalho scored for the Hawks and Andrew Baker brought home the dough for the Redwings. Great performance between the wickets by Brad Ballman and Darren O'Brien! Ice baths for these 2 guys. Separate tubs.

Flyers 4 Oilers 3: Seven penalties were called in this spirited game as both teams were hungry for the 2 points and extra cheese on their nachos up at the bar. 4 different players scored for the orange guys including some razzle-dazzle by rookie Dylan McInerney. For the Oil, Steve Ditta dropped a deuce and Shawn James scored once in a losing cause. Final shots were 22-13 for the Oilers, thanks again Nicole.

Masters Division:

Penguins 10 Redwings 0: Good greef. The Wings had a stone in their shoes from the get-go but lemme tell ya, Redwings goalie Alex Greychuk will bounce back after this loss and will be a better man for it. A few too many homemade meatballs before the game sat in his stomach all night, could've happened to any of us. Dave Smith led the way with 3 goals and 3 apples. Gary Guthro scored a pair, so did John "helter" Elter. Al "camp" Granata added a pair of dandy assists for the winning side while J.J. MacNeil earned the shutout. Hopefully the game sheet is correct, J.J.

Bruins 6 Sharks 3: Bruins Dale Brons was still talking during a pregame media scrum about Stompin Tom playing the Horseshoe Tavern back in 73, He ended up scoring a goal and adding 3 assists as the B's drowned the Sharks 6-3. Ghislain Piche scored his 28th career hat trick and Steve Horner scored a pair for the winners. Sharks got a bigtime snipe from Ron Cooper who also took the game puck home and put it on ebay after signing it. He passed Dave "tiger" Williams on the all-time goal list with that beauty.

Stars 7 Blackhawks 3: Alfonso Tinebra had a can of pop before the game and scored 5 consecutive goals, a feat last accomplished by Dave Armstrong back in 83. Tinebra shows an encyclopedic knowledge of the game on and off the ice which rubs off on his teammates. Great game Fonzie! No idea if thats his nickname, just made it up. Hawks Frank Bortolin scored a pair for his hockey club who will go over some game film this week and reset before thier next game.

Kings 7 Flyers 1: This Kings team is smoother than the sans serif font. John Hasbros, Ken "giraffe" Hutchinson and Domenic Chiarini all scored a pair for the winners while Guy Shaver "cut" in and scored for the Flyers. Nice to see the giraffe fitting in well with this experienced Kings team. He leads the Masters Division in expected shots which I guess means he thought about shooting the puck, i dunno...

Well that puts a bow on another week of SCOHA action. We await the time-honoured tradition of at least one SCOHA player falling off a ladder while hanging up the damn Christmas lights. Good news is that noone claimed the 50/50 draw last week so the 8 bucks will carry on to this weekend's games.

Have a great rest of the week, fellas, it's almost Friday.
