This Week in SCOHA – January 24th, 2023

The Storm of the Century Is Coming Edition

Well before we dive into last weekend’s action, a reminder that CHCH news said we are having the biggest storm since 1824 over the next few days. Careful shoveling, fellas. We need you all “back” at the rink.

FRI. JAN. 20TH UNITED DIVISION:

OILERS 5 CANADIENS 3: These 2 teams always put on a show for the SCOHA fans who make it out each and every week. John Carvalho Jr. scored a couple highlight-reel goals to lift the Oilers over the Habs 5-3. Jim DaSilva continued his torrid scoring pace with another snipe. Canadiens were down 6 guys but gave it everything they had. Stick tap to timekeeper Nicole Mol for tallying up the shots on goal for this game. Final shots were 30-19 Oilers but it seemed closer than that. Both teams had a spare goalie, Steve Cuthbert for Les habitants and Jonas Scott for the Oil. Thanks for covering things off on a Friday night, guys.

MASTERS DIVISION:

REDWINGS 3 BRUINS 2: This Jonas Scott kid played his 2nd game in a row and won 3-2. John Carvalho Sr. scored the game winner as the Wings edged the Bruins 3-2. Bruins got a slick goal from Mike Vanderzee but couldn’t get the equalizer late in the game. Bruins outshot the Wings 15-9 but fell a bit short on the scoreboard.

BLACKHAWKS 5 SHARKS 4: This game was nuts. Hawks Bill Kircos scored the game winner with 4 ticks on the clock for the 5-4 win. Bill, I yield to your offensive expertise. Blackhawks #19 Dave Langille was marked off the scoresheet but apparently scored 2 goals so he has some pretty good aim from his sofa at home, lemme tell ya. Sharks John Elter continued his weekly routine of scoring goals, adding two more to his stats.

SUN.JAN.22ND: UNITED DIVISION:

FLYERS 3 BLACKHAWKS 3: The Haslams keep skating around with the puck like they own the damn place. Both Ryan and Brent scred to help lift their Flyers to a 3-3 tie versus the Hawks. Andrew “sorry buddy, the gas station isn’t for another 12” Miles, Ryan Bili and Marc “are you with Rogers or” Bellhumeur replied for the guys in white.

CANADIENS 2 SHARKS 1: Another 6 guys missing from the Habs lineup, the guys that showed up for the 2 weekend games are apparently still sleeping, they’re so exhausted. Max “it’s not a jacket, it’s a” Cote scored the game winner for the Habs who battled hard all night for the 2 points. Thanks to the 3 guys that filled in for the Canadiens! Joe Shulist scored the lone goal for the Sharks. This guy should open up a sports bar with a name like that!

OILERS 5 BRUINS 3: The Oilers were ahead 4-0 before the Bruins turned it up a notch. In the end, the Oil slipped by the B’s 5-3. 5 different players lit the lamp for the Oilers including Jim DaSilva, who’s been gold from the slot the past 3 or 4 weeks. Christmas Yves Bisson scored for the Bruins, as well as Jeff Davis and captain Wayne Sliwinski. This game had a playoff feel to it. I know because I was on the ice for it. End of this game got hairier than George The Animal Steel’s shoulders but things eventually settled down. Anyways, big win for the Oilers who regain their position atop the United standings by 1 point over the Flyers who they play this upcoming Sunday night.

MASTERS DIVISION:

BLACKHAWKS 4 STARS 3: There was a lot of caffeine in this one, ladies and gentlemen. Bruce Gunby found the range for the game winner as the Hawks got by the Stars 4-3. I had the over 6.5 on this game so I was happy. The Stars had their chances to even this thing up late but Joe DeFaria folded up the Stars clothes with them still in them for the big win. Hawks Larry “ballroom” Litzgus scored a pair to keep his great season rolling right along. And Brian Foley chipped in with a pair of assists and the game puck afterwards.

FLAMES 5 FLYERS 1: The Flames won again.

BRUINS 3 SHARKS 3: This game was well worth the price of admission. Spare goalie Scott Johnson and Sharks Joe LoCiccero turned away more shots than an AA meeting at a disco club. John Elter with another 2 goal performance for the Sharks while Al “the godfather” Angelone, Bobby “stop stalling it’s your” Tirnanic and Tim Manning replied for the Bruins. This game was the game of the night, folks. I set my vcr timer for it but ended up watching it at the rink in person, glad I did.

PENGUINS 2 REDWINGS 1: The Redwings juggled two spare goalies for this game. Brad Ballman kicked things off before Scotty Johnson hopped on the ice to take over. In the end, the Pens squeeked by the Wings 2-1. Steve “Mr.Clutch” Smith scored the winner. This guy is cooler than the other side of the pillow. His anticipation of where the puck is going to be is something we haven’t seen since some Wayne Gretzky kid did all the time. I bet Gretzky wakes up 10 seconds before the alarm goes off. He still know what will happen later on. Paul Buzzelli was all over the ice like a bee all night. He got rewarded with a veteran-like goal in a losing cause.

Well I am beat. January weeks are long and I need my Sealy like you wouldn’t believe. Have a great rest of the week, see you at the rink this weekend.
