The Blades are Too Dull vs Too Sharp, Make Up Your Damn Mind Edition

A few games over the weekend started to get a bit salty. You almost needed a moose to lick the salt off. All in all, you can tell the action is ramping up as we approach the end of October. United teams are starting to gel and the games are getting faster. Flyers team rep Mike Haslam was spotted applying Rub A5/35 the other week but claimed it is his new hockey cologne, knees are fine. Hattrick by Faberge, available at Shoppers, 8 bucks. Speaking of hat trick, this new Jordan Campbell kid in United is lighting the lamp multiple times every Friday, reminds me of Sean Riley when he played for the Lethbridge Bonnets back in 81. Campbell is an early favourite for Rookie of the Year. We will try and get him on the Pucks in Deep Podcast soon…

United Division:

Flyers 2 Leafs 1 Flyers rookie Adam “brigger of rain” Briggs scored the game winner with a shade over 6 minutes left as the Flyers hung on to defeat the Leafs 2-1. Duane “from the planet” Marzi also scored for the guys in orange as he passed Rick Vaive in the all-time goal scoring list. Devin “turn the heat on will ya, I am” Friesen had the lone Leaf goal in a losing cause. Stick tap to both goalkeepers as they faced a barrage of pucks all night long. This was a defensive battle, only appreciated by us older fellas. The Flyers deal with adversity every game. Heck, the only adversity a lot of people had growing up was that Starbucks didn’t have a drive thru. Like you actually had to go into the store. Brutal.

Bruins 7 Blackhawks 3 The Blackhawks promise they will revarnish their gameplan after this one. A tough 7-3 loss had one fan throw his Hawks fridge magnet onto the playing surface mid-way through the 2nd period. Unacceptable. We have video, we will track you down. When all was said and done, Jordan Campbell and Joe “shoeless joe” Schulist each scored hatties for the winning side. As a multiple eclipse survivor, I can see this Hawk team getting things together very soon. A full week of hard practices will sure as hell help. A bright spot in this loss was 9 foot 6 Jonathan O’Grady who had a goal and a hamburger helper in a losing cause.

Masters Division:

Senators 4 Leafs 2 Brock Hotrum scored 2 goals between the wickets of Leaf goalie Sandro Marrone as the Sens doubled up the Leafs 4-2. It was Larry Litzgus 1500th career game but the Senators ruined the party for the veteran. That Chris Marttila guy along with Paul McGraw rounded out the Sens scoring while who else but Steve Horner tallied twice for the guys in blue. Give these Leafs a few more games to get motoring, they aren’t ready to fade into the periphery just yet. It’s still early.

Bruins 11 Sharks 2 Ok, This Bill Foley character is starting to get a bit out of control. 5 goals and an apple skyrockets him into the number one slot on the scoring list. I guess ten packs of that mushy hot apple rolled oats before each game seems to be paying dividends for this fella. But hey, Bill is a health nut now and he doesn’t give a care what we say. The Bruins benefited from spare “President of the Piped Pagoda” Tim Visser, who turned aside 22 shots for the victory. Bruins defenceman Dave Graham earned his lucrative contract extension by recording a goal, 4 assists and 4 penalty minutes. A solid night’s work. Jason Hoffman and Dave “le legend” Langille replied for the Sharks who promise their fans they will sharpen their teeth before this weekends game against the Leafs.

Grand Masters Division:

Stars 5 Sharks 5 This game had a bit of everything. Sharks goaltender Brian Deanes chipped in with an assist, #5 on both teams scored a pair of goals, and the person who won the 50/50 draw wasn’t present to collect their 3 bucks. Stars rookie Veljko “Velcro” Gavric had a strong game, picking up an assist to add to his SCOHA portfolio. His attention to detail on and off the ice will have him climbing the scoring list in no time.

Kraken 3 Flyers 2 Good grief, this one went pear-shaped but the Kraken held off the Flyers 3-2. The Kraken took 6 penalties but miraculously won the game. Flyers were seen Monday morning working on their power play. No guff. In the end it was Steve Kivell, friend of the podcast, scoring the winner with only 15 seconds left. Steve’s team wanted to carry him off the ice but his pre-game meatball sub with double onions wasn’t sitting well. He skated off without incident.

Blackhawks 6 Bruins 2 Let’s pause and talk about Dennis Klander (Rednalk spelled backwards). He is currently in the top 5 scoring leaders list and has come back this season in tremendous shape. His tenacity out there has raised more than 2 eyebrows and the workmanship is rubbing off on his teammates. Dennis had the game winner as the Hawks folded up the Bruins like an origami owl 6-2. Steph Rioux did yeoman’s work in the opposition end, scoring a pair and adding a tuna helper for the winners. “Christmas” Yves Bisson and Gord “chicken fried” Bryce scored for the Bruins who look forward to a hard week of on and off-ice training to get set for this upcoming weekend.

Well that’s it from this end of the ice. The weekend is almost here. The Jays are killing it right now and the arena bar have the buy 2 pounds, get a 3rd free and lemme tell ya, they are the size of toilet seats, give the dry cajun style a sporting chance, you will thank me later. Blue cheese on the side.
