This Week in SCOHA – November 6th, 2024
The Spring Forward, Fall Back Edition
Well folks, it’s dark at 5pm for a while so bring on 6 months of dreary weather. Not looking forward to a long winter, not gonna lie. This week’s guest on the Pucks In Deep Podcast was none other than Masters Guy Shaver, who caught a bit of a cold while waiting in line for a book signing. He eventually got a signed copy of Quick Money for Dummies by Robin Banks which was apparently worth getting a case of the sniffles for. Thanks Guy for carving out some time to join the podcast. At any rate, let’s dive head-first into last week’s action before my self-imposed deadline passes.
United Division:
Blackhawks 6 Bruins 3: Marc Bellhumeur doesn’t care what people think. He even takes his shoes and socks off on a plane. Goes about his everyday business with the usual hard-working accord that spills out on the ice each week. That’s why he is the captain. Despite being a late scratch for this game, his Hawks doubled up the Bruins 6-3 in front of an announced crowd of 4. Cory Herbert dropped a deuce while Peter Thompkins scored his 345th career goal for the winning side. For the Bruins, Duane “from the planet” Marzi scored a goal of the year candidate in a losing cause. Marzi skates like that McStevenson guy on the Edmonton Oilers, definitely a force to be reckoned with going forward.
Redwings 4 Flyers 3: Flyer’s Mike Haslam’s rookie card has leaped to an impressive $5.75 and this guy is hoping to get one signed next time I am at the rink on a Friday night. Despite his weekly heroics, his men in orange were defeated 4-3 by the pesky Redwings. Chris Butler (got him in the pool) scored a hatty for the winners while spare Dave Graham added a snipe for good measure. Both teams played their usual spirited style, makes for good television. Tempers at times were hotter than a jar of Chinese chili oil. For the Flyers, Jack Dowell, Mike Rostecki and Ryan Haslam scored highlight reel goals.
Masters Division:
Sharks 3 Bruins 3: Sharks Dave “Le Legende” Langille scored his 2nd of the game to tie things up as both teams skated to a 3-3 saw-off. Joad Durst scored his 900th goal of the damn season. This guy eats beef tips and gravy before each game to get an advantage on the opposition. Not fair. For the Bruins, Wayne scored 3. That’s all.
Blackhawks 3 Penguins 3: Brock Hotrum’s last second goal was the game-tyer as the Bruins salvaged a point against one of the league-leaders, the Penguinos, 3-3. Newcomer Paul Courville also scored for the Hawks while Mike Archer (new grandfather, congrats!), Peter Fantauzzo and Steve “around the” Horner replied for the Pens and added 2 helpers for insurance. This Hawk team is starting to get a move on. Team captain Jason Hoffman sold the team bus to stay under the salary cap and would run through a wall for his hockey club. Wait til winter, Jason will get out his Whitesnake cassette tape box and scrape off his teammates windshields so they drive home safely.
Devils 1 Senators 1: What a classic defensive battle for the ages! Both teams had spare goaltenders and they stole the show as Brad Stone and Darren O’Brien turned aside a total of 59 shots for the tie. Warren DeForest scored the lone Sens goal while Steve Smith sniped the goal for the Devils. Devils goalie Bruno Santanato is day-to-day with an injury, we wish his the best and hope he gets back to the rink soon. Sens goalie Tymen Edelkoort is on a 2-week vacay at a lovely resort in Dundas but will return soon.
Grand Masters:
Stars 2 Sharks 2: William Reid and Rick “tik tok” Estok scored for the Sharks as they tied the Stars 2-2. Newcomer Nick Polimeni and Rob Harrison replied for the Stars who appear ready to start climbing the standings. Look out folks, these guys are hungry and are forgetting about the start they had to the season that was messier than a poppy seed bagel.
Flyers 4 Redwings 2: Wings were missing Terry Gudgeon who was basking in the sun and hopefully not poking his eye out with the little umbrella in his drink. Flyers Rob “acooka-racha” Nacha scored the eventual game winner as the Flyers kept rolling with the big 2 points. Gord “chicken fried” Bryce also scored for the Flyers. Gord keeps getting on the score sheet. I’ve seen better hands on a digital clock but Gord is proving myself and everyone else wrong this year. Great game, Gord! For the Wings, Steph Rioux and Len Potts bulged the twine in a losing cause.
