This Week in SCOHA - February 21st, 2024

What a wild weekend of SCOHA action as it was the first, and hopefully not an annual glass shattering game between the United Oilers and Bruins that had everyone in the damn city talking. Then there’s Joe LoCicero stopping Mike VanDerzee on a penalty shot to help preserve the victory for the Masters Flyers. Anyways, let’s get right into it, I’ve got things to do.

United Division:

Oilers 4 Bruins 1 (ppd) Game was halted after a Bruin fired the puck in and it sent the glass tumbling into a million and 8 pieces. Game was called and apparently they are STILL trying to fix it. Before the game was called, Nick Castelli scored a bizarre goal and next thing you know it was 3-0 for the Oil. Bruins got one back before the world ended.

Redwings 2 Sharks 2: Sharks scored 2 in the second period to bite back and tie the Redwings 2-2. Joe Schulist of course scored the game tying goal. Shots were 28-12 (thanks Nicole for tallying these up) for the Redwings but Darren O’Brien stole the show yet again. Marco Caiella and Doug Moulton replied for the Wings and what a game this was. Duane Marzi added the other Shark goal.

Excuse the quick and to the point blog this week, this guy is on vacation!

Flyers 6 Blackhawks 0: Paul Gabrielle turned aside 13 shots for the goose egg as the Flyers folded up the Hawks like a beach towel 6-0. Brent Haslam scored a pair for the guys in tangerine and Mike Rostecki continued his strong season, adding another goal for the back of his hockey card. Reporters tried asking Hawk captain Marc Bellehumeur what’s up lately with his team but he refused comment.

Masters Division:

Stars 6 Blackhawks 2: Crazy game. I had the Hawks on my Proline ticket, thanks a lot, guys. 5 different players scored when all was said and done while the usual suspects Steve Smith and Nick Miscione replied for the Hawks. Imagine a 7-game series between these two teams? Not me because it will never happen.

Flyers 4 Kings 3: Joe LoCicero’s save on a penalty shot proved to be the difference as the Flyers crowned the Kings 4-3. Mike Vanderzee didn’t cut across left then come back right with the backhand upstairs like I taught him but who am I to tell a prolific goal scorer like Mike how to bury the puck. He is vowing to get his revenge next time these two teams play, you heard it here first, folks. Dave Graham scored a hatty after playing the game before… well half a game before for the United Oilers. He took over this game like it was his last and took over his team’s scoring lead. Was nice to see Dwayne Kavanaugh lace up his twirlers and spare for the Kings. Good guy on and off the ice.

Sharks 3 Bruins 3: Bruins were down 4 guys until Terry Gudgeon performed yeoman’s work and subbed to help out. Steve Horner can score goals and don’t even think about looking me in the eye and tell me otherwise. He scored a pair for the B’s while Andy Rossit was on fire, scoring a hatty for a spirited Shark hockey club. This Rossit guy is potent out there, almost as potent as an imported Hungarian salami. Great game, Andy, you deserved the game puck.

Penguins 5 Redwings 3: John Elter and Bob “Happy” Ballentyne both scored a pair as the Penguins edged the Redwings 5-3. Larry Litzgus dropped a deuce for the Wings who were pretty spicy all game long, desperate for this win. They gave it their all, just fell a bit short. This Penguin team plays a neat and tidy game, folks. My pick to at least make it to the cup finals.
